Finding apartments for rent in Montevideo is not particularly difficult. Being able to rent one when you have just arrived in Uruguay can be. The reason is that landlords commonly require a rental guarantee, and many of the traditional guarantee systems expect documents, employment history or income records from Uruguay. If you are moving from India, you probably do not have any of those yet. That does not necessarily mean you cannot rent.

Before moving from India to Uruguay
There are a few separate processes that you should not leave until the last minute. Depending on your circumstances, these may include:

Do Indian citizens need a visa for Uruguay?
Indian citizens travelling with an ordinary passport currently need a visa to enter Uruguay, and it is worth verifying the applicable requirement before travelling. The type of visa, documentation and procedure depend on the purpose of the trip and the applicant's circumstances. Before buying a non-refundable ticket, check the current requirements with the Uruguayan authorities and the Uruguayan consular office responsible for your application.
If you intend to become a resident, the residence procedure is a separate process. Uruguay has different residence categories depending on the applicant's circumstances. Foreign documents used in the process generally need to be apostilled or legalised, and documents that are not in Spanish may require an official translation in Uruguay. Because obtaining some documents again after leaving India can be inconvenient, it is worth checking the current residence requirements before travelling.
The housing problem many newcomers discover too late
A common mistake is to arrive in Montevideo, find an apartment you like and only then ask: “What do I need to rent it?”
In Uruguay, landlords commonly ask for a rental guarantee. That guarantee may come through an insurance company, a government-backed system, a permitted deposit arrangement or another structure accepted by the owner.
The problem for somebody arriving from India is simple. You may have:
- a good job;
- a signed employment contract;
- a high salary;
- savings;
- international income;
- professional qualifications;
- or sufficient assets to comfortably afford the property;
but still have no Uruguayan employment history, local payslips or financial history. Those are two different things. Being financially capable of paying the rent does not automatically mean that every standard rental guarantee will accept your application.
Can an Indian professional rent in Uruguay without local history?
Potentially, yes. The important question is not simply whether foreigners are allowed to rent in Uruguay. They are. The important question is: which rental guarantee can work with your particular situation?
For example, the situation of an employee being transferred to Uruguay by an international company can be very different from that of a remote worker, an entrepreneur or somebody arriving with savings but no local employment. Depending on the case, documents that may be relevant to an evaluation can include:
- your employment contract;
- a letter from your employer;
- your passport or identification;
- agreed salary;
- expected starting date;
- evidence of foreign income;
- professional contracts;
- bank statements or other evidence of financial capacity.
Approval is never automatic and ultimately depends on the guarantee provider and the conditions accepted by the landlord. But you do not necessarily need to wait until you have lived in Uruguay for several months before asking what is possible.
If you are moving to Uruguay for work
This is one of the situations where preparing before travelling can make the biggest difference. If your company is hiring you in Uruguay or transferring you from India, ask HR for:
- the exact office where you will work;
- expected office attendance;
- your employment or assignment letter;
- expected salary;
- your starting date;
- whether the company provides relocation assistance;
- whether it can provide supporting documentation for your rental.

Where should you live in Montevideo?
Do not choose a neighbourhood only because someone told you that Pocitos, Punta Carretas or Carrasco is “the best place to live”. The right location depends on your daily life. - commuting time;
- public transport;
- access to supermarkets and services;
- monthly rent;
- common expenses;
- heating;
- furnished versus unfurnished properties;
- the rental guarantee accepted by each landlord.
An apartment that looks cheaper may not actually be cheaper after adding building expenses, transport and heating. And an attractive property is of little use if the landlord requires a guarantee that you cannot obtain.
Should you rent a temporary apartment first?
Sometimes. A furnished or temporary rental can be useful for your first weeks in Uruguay, particularly if you want to visit properties personally before signing a longer contract. But it should not automatically be assumed that every foreigner needs to spend several months in temporary accommodation. If your financial and employment situation can be analysed beforehand, it may be possible to understand your longer-term rental options before you arrive. That can save considerable time and avoid paying temporary-rental prices for longer than necessary.

- move-in date;
- parking, if required;
- internet availability;
- and total amount required to enter the property.
If you are seriously considering a property before arriving, request a live video viewing rather than relying exclusively on photographs. Never send significant sums of money merely because someone claiming to represent a property asks you to reserve it. Verify the agency or agent and obtain the conditions of the transaction in writing.
