Neighborhood guide

Cordón neighborhood: rentals, universities, location and data

Cordón was Montevideo's first neighborhood expansion beyond the immediate surroundings of the former walled city. It is identified by Avenida 18 de Julio, educational and cultural institutions, the Tristán Narvaja market and connections with Centro, Tres Cruces and Parque Rodó.

Cordón combines 18 de Julio, universities, cultural spaces, shops and residential streets. Cordón Norte, Sur and Soho can orient listings but do not create separate official neighborhoods.

Before buying or renting in Cordón

  1. Clarify the subarea

Treat Cordón Soho as a commercial name and always verify the neighborhood and address before applying comparable data.

  2. Review the co-ownership

Request common expenses, meeting minutes, reserve-fund information and pending works to understand the shared cost and condition of the building.

  3. Check the block

Assess circulation, light and sound at relevant times; the main corridors do not represent every street.

  4. Compare the same property type

Use apartments with similar size, bedrooms, condition and parking before interpreting price per square meter.

A brief history

Municipio B records that the area was known as El Cardal and that Bartolomé Mitre Martínez laid out about 60 blocks for settlement in 1765.

The land was marked with boundary cords, an origin the municipal source associates with the neighborhood's name.
